TESS

We marched under the covered patio to the guards’ quarters as quickly as possible. A mix of blood and bullet casings were scattered all around, and the wind had blown Nan’s carefully cut-out frost-proof material onto the covered outdoor pool. She must have been so frightened while she lay there with all that gunfire going on around her. But knowing Nan, she would have been more worried about me and Lily than she was about herself.

Nate had driven down to the gates so he could escort the ambulance through when it arrived. Dave and Tanner were being tended to by Kevin in the kitchen, though I was reassured once again that they would be fine.

Walking through the guards’ quarters in the old manor house was a much better experience than walking through the extension where Lily and I lived. The property showed no evidence of the chaos and terror the gunmen had brought to our home. There were no bullet holes in the walls; the furniture was right where it should be, and there wasn’t a trace of blood anywhere, which made me think they were only after me, Lily or James. Possibly all three of us. But why? What would they gain from taking one or all of us at this point? They had to know by now that we would never hand over the guidance system, and none of us had the codes. Especially me and Lily. We had nothing to do with KOLCAT. It wasn’t lost on me that the gunman was backing out of Lily’s room without scanning it for threats, because if he had, he’d have noticed me pointing my rifle directly at him. I saw him lower his weapon when he spotted Anna. If Lily had been the target, he would have taken a shot or explored that room further.

Due to the size of the manor house, it took a couple of minutes to get from the back of the property to the foyer, where Nan lay on the floor awaiting the ambulance. During the whole time it had taken us to get there, James had been barking orders at people over his phone. I’d been lost in my thoughts, replaying everything that had happened in Lily’s room. I hadn’t a clue he’d been speaking with Gustav until we got to Nan.

She was leaning back against the bottom of the staircase with Jack and Andy beside her. They’d covered her with a duvet to keep her warm, and if not for Nan being on the floor with her features pinched in pain, I would have said she was sleeping. After discarding the blanket I’d been covering Lily with, I sat on the floor beside her, carefully adjusting our positions so that we both faced her.

“Look who’s here, Nan. I told you they were fine. Not a scratch on them.” Jack stroked his wife’s cheek as he spoke. He sounded calm, but his watery eyes and forced smile told a different story.

Nan opened her eyes and glanced our way, holding her hand out to Lily.
