Thistle dished out a red berry mash for breakfast. Roane fluttered about, topping each bowl of mash with some of Ondelle's herbs.

Meanwhile, Brigitta displayed her supplies on the boulders, and the others gathered around to examine the items.

"Such sorcery!" exclaimed Devin.

"Hardly," said Brigitta. She pointed to two small canisters. "The firepepper and dustmist may come in handy, but this," she picked up the larger spell seed containing the zynthia, "this is our strongest weapon."

"Your zyntha's inside there?" asked Ferris.

"Zynthia, yes. And if they've never seen one before, neither Mabbe nor Croilus could fight its hypnotic power. That takes training to do."

"So Zhay and I pretend to have captured you," said Devin, taking his bowl of mash from Roane, "and you offer this zynthia as a gift to Croilus and use it on him?"

"Exactly."

"And then what?" asked Jarlath.

"Then we take his sands. Mabbe has promised to release Ondelle if I bring them to her."

Zhay burst out laughing. "Yes, and you can trust what Mabbe says."

"I didn't say that," said Brigitta, "but she thinks I believe her. That gives us some time."

"For what?" asked Zhay.

"To figure out how to deal with her. I haven't gotten that far yet." Brigitta looked around at their skeptical faces. "But at least Croilus will be out of the way."

Zhay muttered to himself as he extinguished the fire.

"Do you have a better plan, Zhay?" Jarlath asked.

"Isn't this why we're here?" said Ferris. "To get rid of Croilus and Mabbe."

As Zhay continued to putter around the fire pit, everyone else grew excited about the prospect of leaving Croilus incapacitated. Brigitta packed the spell seed with the green zynthia, along with the firepepper, dustmist, and globelight. She left the rest of her belongings behind a rock, making sure the suclaide was well-hidden from Roane.

"Ready," she said to Devin and Zhay.

They said their goodbyes and flew from the fortress, over the fallen boulders, and back down into the crevasse. When they reached the bottom, Zhay dropped to the log with the pits.

"Hey, there's seven log stones," he said.

"Yeah," Devin said, grinning, "I added a pit for Brigitta this morning."

"What is that?" she asked.

"A message system." Devin pointed at the log. "If you're in the Gathering Place, you put a white stone in your spot. When you leave, if you don't know when you'll be back, you leave it empty. If you plan to be back within a sun or two, put a black stone. If there's trouble, put red. Don't go to the Gathering Place if there's a red stone in your spot."

He pointed to the pit on the far right. "That one's for you."

Brigitta picked up a black stone and placed it in the seventh pit. Devin laughed and placed one in his pit as well.

Zhay shook his head. "Come on."

The three faeries traveled east until they arrived at the River That Runs Backwards, then turned south to follow it, keeping a safe enough distance to avoid its pull. A moonbeat later the banks of the river were high enough that they could cross.
