⢠Subtitles If itâs a foreign-language film, set Dialogue and Subtitles options from the dropdown menus behind the Audio & Subtitles tab.
⢠Rip Hit the Start button at the bottom of the window and the encoding will begin. Donât hold your breath.
⢠Drop the file into iTunes Unless you choose to save it somewhere else, the file will eventually appear on the desktop. Drag the file into the main iTunes window. This should create a copy of the new file in your iTunes Library allowing you to then delete the original file from your desktop.
Tip: To learn about importing from other music and video sources, see The Rough Guides to iPods & iTunes.
Converting files in iTunes
If you find yourself with music or video files in iTunes that canât be copied across to the iPad when you sync (perhaps they are of the wrong file type or, in the case of music files, have too high a bitrate), you can easily convert them to an iPad-friendly format.
To do this for a video file, select it within iTunes and choose Advanced > Create iPad or Apple TV. In the case of an audio file, the option is determined by the Import Settings that you define within iTunes Preferences. So, for example, if iTunes is set to import files as MP3, you will be offered the option to Create MP3 Version within the Advanced menu.
Supported video formats
Getting technical for a moment, the various video formats that the iPad supports include:
⢠H.264-encoded video up to 720p at 30 frames per second, with AAC-LC audio up to 160Kbps, 48kHz, in m4v, mp4 and mov formats.
⢠MPEG-4 up to 640x480 pixels, 2.5Mbps, with AAC-LC audio up to 160Kbps, 48kHz.
⢠Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) Avi-wrapped and up to 1280x720 pixels, 35Mbps, 30 frames per second with ulaw PCM stereo audio. (This is the video format often used by digital cameras that can take video.)
If you find that you have files on your computer that donât meet these criteria, either convert them within iTunes or use HandBrake, as previously described.
Managing files in iTunes
Once you start digging around within the Music and Movies sync tabs of iTunes it will soon become clear that the easiest way to manage your content for syncing to the iPad is by using playlists:
⢠Regular playlists To create a playlist, hit the New Playlist button (the ) at the bottom-left of the iTunes window. Then drag individual songs into the new list or add entire albums, artists or genres in one fell swoop. You can also create a new playlist by dragging selections into the sidebar, or by selecting a bunch of material and choosing File > New Playlist.
â¢Smart Playlists Rather than being compiled manually by you, these are put together by iTunes according to a set of rules, or âconditionsâ, that you define. It might be songs with a certain word in their title, or a set of genres, or the tracks youâve listened to the most â or a combination of any of these kinds of things.
