Sexual attitudes

While it’s a sweeping statement, the sexual attitudes of sub-Saharan Africa are broadly liberal. Although you’ll rarely see open displays of affection between men and women, expressive sexuality is a very obvious part of the social fabric in most communities, and even in Muslim areas Islamic moral strictures tend to be generously interpreted – though across the Maghreb some communities are deeply conservative and patriarchal. South of the Sahara, all adults are regarded as naturally sexually active, and sex is often openly discussed – though not in the presence of children. If you travel with an opposite-sex partner, you’ll find the relationship tends to insulate you somewhat from locals of the opposite sex.
