Zefyros Inner harbour 28310 28206; map. If you’re determined to eat by the water, Zefyros is one of the more reliable of the harbourside fish tavernas, offering reasonably priced (for this location) fish and seafood such as sole fillet stuffed with prawns (€18.50) or fisherman’s spaghetti (€17.50). March–Oct daily 10am–midnight.
New town
Akros Ikogeniakon Moátsou 40 28310 55403; map. Modern-style estiatório, entirely off the tourist trail, serving hearty daily specials (€5–7) that you choose from the heated trays behind a glass display. Busiest at lunchtime. Mon–Sat 8am–6pm.
Mesostrati Yerakári 1 28310 29375; map. An economical little neighbourhood taverna-ouzerí serving well-prepared country dishes on a shady small terrace; salads are all €5, Greek oven dishes €6, grills €7. The main reason to come, though, is for the excellent live Cretan lyra and laoúto (lute) music (Wed–Sat from 9pm). Mon–Sat 11am–3pm & 6pm–2am, Sun 6pm–2am.
Taverna Iliovasilemata Periferiákos 28310 23943; map. The Sunsets Taverna is frequented more for its spectacular sunset views than its food, but the meals aren’t bad value (menus for two €20 and €25), there’s usually a decent selection of fish, and often freshly caught octopus drying on the line. The terrace tables are right by the shore, and it’s an ideal place for an ouzo and mezédhes at sunset with the breakers splashing over the rocks below. April–Oct daily 9am–11pm.
Zambia Stamathioudháki 20 28310 24561; map. Popular – and good-value – local taverna with a seafront terrace, specializing in fish (sold by weight; sea bream portion €15, grilled octopus €9, fisherman’s spaghetti €12) and serving delicious lunchtime mayireftá (traditional baked dishes €6–9). Daily 11am–midnight.
Zisi Mákhis Krítis 63, Misíria, on the main road in the hotel zone 3km east of town 28310 28814, taverna-zisis.gr; map. Zisi is one of the great Réthymno institutions, where local families get together for celebrations, especially on Sunday lunchtimes, when booking is advised. The place is large and elegant with real table linen, mayireftá (traditional baked dishes) laid out in heated display cabinets and a menu filled with other tempting fish and meat dishes; and it’s exceptionally good value (yemistá – stuffed vegetables – €4.40; roast beef with lemon, wine and olive oil €7.50). It’s a short taxi or bus ride from the centre. Daily 11am–midnight.
DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
Réthymno’s bars and nightlife are concentrated on the seafront – especially either side of the inner harbour around Venizélou and Platía Plastíra – and up Salamínos and Melissinoú heading inland. The café-cum-cocktail places around the Rimóndi fountain are great for people-watching, but the cacophony of late-evening noise from competing bars is less than relaxing. Summer-only clubs operate to the east, among the big hotels, and it’s also worth looking out for posters advertising beach parties.
Cul de Sac Platía Petiháki 28310 26914; map. Prime people-watching spot on the busy corner by the Rimóndi Fountain. They serve brunch, sandwiches and burgers but mostly it’s a place to drink – coffees by day, pitchers of beer and cocktails later, when there’s sometimes a DJ or live band. Daily 8am–2am.
