CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE

I want to die, Zia. My faith has left me for good this time. I no longer think of God. Do you remember me telling you of Mikhail Seven who was at death’s door; the man who told me of his murderous papa killing prisoners on the White Sea Canal construction? You must remember, you must! I actually remember writing to you of this demonic man and having it sent by the courier. He told me that he had sent it specifically. Anyway, Mikhail Seven somehow recovered from his wounded leg infection with so many blood transfusions that claimed so many prisoner’s lives. The creature is on crutches now and hobbled into me earlier today as I was sweeping out one of the guard’s barracks.

“I have lived, Citizen Leah,” he snarled. “Lived to repay you for your sarcastic comments whilst I loitered at death’s door. I am going to hurt you like you cannot imagine. You are mine to obliterate. Mine!”

What kind of a man says something like that to a female inmate?

I stagger from one anxious pit to another here, Zia, and I don’t know how much more I can bear. Why did this monster live? Why did the Almighty allow him to live? I cannot stomach that Mikhail Seven is watching me somehow and that he will pounce when he chooses. Why didn’t he just recover and kill me without alerting me to his sickly, demonic intentions? I am now contemplating my own end. Why give the sicko the satisfaction of bragging to another inmate that I was one of his victims, like he bragged about his rat father! I am sick with fear.

I just wanted to live. It was my life, not their life to expunge anytime they saw fit. What system allows prisoners, prisoners who are innocent of everything in the sane world but guilty of everything in their insane world, to be disposed of as if we are cockroaches?

I dread seeing this creature again. I must rediscover my faith and pray that he dies as quickly as God will allow it. Maybe he can injure himself in the woods again or maybe get snared by a rabid wolf! I would give a limb myself to sit back and watch the Creature being devoured! I’m quite sure that The Almighty did not mean to create such a creature! I had best pray, to remind God that Mikhail Seven breathes. I am sure it is a mistake. X
