Mike gave us what we needed to succeed. This was not always what we felt we needed, but instead what he saw we needed to achieve our best. The result was unfiltered honesty and it took some getting used to. When Mike called you out for being late, being lazy, being weak, being overconfident, or being drunk on the weekend, you had to have a gut check. Mike, however, was clear about his methods. We would always receive his most honest and most expert advice. He consistently spoke his mind. This meant you had to be consistently honest with yourself. Although difficult and uncomfortable, this proved to be an incredibly powerful and efficient mechanism for growth.

Mike would always say, “I am not here to tell you what to do. I am here to show you what has worked for me in the past.” Success gave him credibility. His athletes had won gold or silver medals in every Olympics from 1984 to 2012. Mike never yelled. He spoke softly and with intense conviction. He held a clear and consistent vision of excellence. Mike demanded excellence from our team in an indirect way: he created an environment where we demanded excellence from ourselves.

When you take on a mentor, you have to be ready to learn from them. Choosing the right mentor to help you achieve your goal is key.
