After dropping the traitor off — and getting Abba’s approval to let Zad in on the rebellion after she told him all she’d heard and observed — Allie and Zad transferred back to the Gardens, to “Ezra’s” ranch. Allie wanted to talk to the angel but wanted to be away from prying ears and eyes. It sucked, not knowing who you could trust.

Plus, she wanted to look for the bobcat.

Allie was surprised to see that the ranch house porch was fixed, back to normal. Obviously, it was Abba’s doing. But why He would rebuild the place was a question for another day and time.

She looked around for a bit, but there was no sign of her bobcat champion. Zad even helped search once she admitted what she was doing.

“This is where I fought one of yours,” she told Zad as she jerked her head toward the yard area when they met back in front of the house. “I thought it was a demon, but it was Imamiah in disguise. He ‘bout kicked my butt.”

Zad ran a weary hand over his face, the action too human for Allie’s liking. She needed the angels — at least those on Abba’s side — to be big, bad supernatural dudes, not puny humans.

“I can see why,” Zad said. “We’ve trained you to fight against demons, not angels. After angels fall from grace, they lose many of their abilities over time. But not right away.” He sighed.

“I’m not sure how equipped the Remnants are going to be to fight angels and demons.”

Allie cringed. She’d been dreading The Releasing for that very reason — not being ready. But that was just in a fight with demons. There was no way they were going to be able to fight them both.

They were so doomed.

“I know,” she whined so pathetically, Zad’s lips twitched as he fought back a smile. “It’s bad enough that I don’t think the team is going to be ready just for Lucifer and his group, plus the humans that he manages to talk into following him, but with the angels added in …” She let her voice trail off. There was no need to voice it.

“So,” Zad said as he moved to the porch and sat on the newly repaired steps. “Why didn’t you tell me about the rebellion and your suspicions? Or was that just something you said for Cassiel’s benefit?”

She flinched, even though she’d been expecting that question from him, and dreading it, since they first took Cass to Abba. She couldn’t lie to Zad — well, technically, she could lie, unlike the angels who actually couldn’t tell a lie, but lying would be a sin, so no — but she really didn’t want to tell him the truth either.

The truth was going to hurt.

Allie sighed again, heavily this time as she plopped down next to him. “I did know about it. But honestly, Abba told me to keep it under wraps. Also… cuz I seriously had no idea who I could trust.
