Big-Time Gamblers
Racing lore is rich with the names of famous gamblers. There was Chicago OâBrien, who originated the system of betting the favorite for show. He was reputed to have bet $100,000 on Man oâ War at odds of 1 to 100, and thus won $1,000 for that investment. His school of playing is still popular.
A second school of playing developed from the methods of the underworld financier Arnold Rothstein. His style was to fix races. Followers of this method, though recognizing that fixed races are a phenomenon of a nostalgic past, emphasize the importance of inside (or hot) information. They try to obtain firsthand information about the betting operations of horsemen.
