The ludic time spent in Florida, in spite of his precautions and against the odds, strengthened Darcy’s attachment to Elizabeth. The weeks that followed brought a bad case of Elizabeth abstinence that seemed impossible to conquer, even if he had predicted otherwise after suffering the pressure of her silent judgmental stare.

The remedy he found was to start listening to her kind of music to fill in the void as the next good excuse to meet her was the World Cup, a month away. Darcy casually talked about the soccer competition with Graham who agreed instantly to go. Not only he cared for the sport but, to an observant eye like his, seeing how Darcy and Elizabeth behaved when close would surely be interesting.

Half the World’s male population had the same plans and they couldn’t find reservations for the first matches. After England’s terrible presentation, they gave up the idea and Darcy, who even insisted with his cousin to at least watch the Final, changed his mind with the destruction of Brazil by Germany in the Semi-finals. Thomas cried for days and if Elizabeth didn’t have any interest on the match, he lost his altogether.

“Let it rest.” He thought to himself resigning to conceal his struggles, believing his inclinations, albeit natural were completely unallowed; by reason, by reflection, by everything – even though he was not ashamed of his feelings.
