Chapter 9

Price

A cold front had blown through and cooled things off enough that it was reasonably pleasant outside. Not that the temperature bothered me as much now that I had a way to deal with it, but I was trying not to rely on my new abilities for everything. We were in the living room. Mal and Ezra had just finished showing me the amulets they had made for my employees. They were absolutely beautiful and I kind of wanted one for myself. They'd apparently been extremely difficult to make, however, and even Ezra looked tired from the effort.

They had formed the holy water and hellfire into a yin yang style symbol, the fire side was a deep reddish orange, and the holy water side was a crystalline white. The whole thing glowed with power, at least to my eyesight. On the back they'd etched warding runes to protect against both demonic and angelic magic. I suspected these amulets, if they survived the conflict, would be something occultists fought over in future generations.

"Aaron, I'm going to take Mayhem for a walk. Feel like being my bodyguard?"

He glanced at the others. When they nodded, he got up and followed me to the door.

"What's up?" he asked once we were outside.

"Thought maybe we should talk for a minute and it's hard to get time alone in the house."

Aaron hunched his shoulders, as if expecting something negative.

I took his hand as we walked.

"I just wanted to know what you wanted from me. I feel like you want to have sex with me, but like, something is holding you back. Now, if you aren't actually interested in sex, that's cool, Aaron, but that's not the feeling I'm getting from you. We don't have to have sex for this relationship to work, but if you want it, and we're not having it, that could cause problems."

"I…" He sighed. "I do want you, Chris. I just…" He hunched his shoulders and rubbed at the back of his neck.

I held his hand while we walked and waited him out.

Mayhem trotted ahead of us, marking his territory.

I had a feeling that we were being stalked by a nightstallion, too, but I didn't see him.

"I don't know what I'm doing, Chris. I've barely had a girlfriend before. I've hardly gotten past first kisses with the few women I've seen. I'm a virgin." He kicked a stray rock on the ground and wouldn't meet my eyes when I glanced at him.

"Oh."

"Yeah, so, like, you've got all these amazing, experienced guys, and…me."

"Hey, you're amazing, too, Aaron."

"At math," he said. "Sabian had to help me the other morning when we had you all tied up."

"Did you like that?"

"Yeah, it was amazing."

"Great, well, you're missing out on an obvious plus of your lack of experience."

"What?" He finally looked at me.

"No bad habits I have to convince you to break." I smiled up at him. "I've been with a few guys that were just so full of themselves, I couldn't even get myself off.
