Two days later, desolation of spirit sent Alison tramping alone on Hampstead Heath in the January drizzle. She had not heard from Richard, and being between plays without one in rehearsal allowed her too much time to brood.

She returned home to find Emma and Janet seated at the kitchen table. Emma’s expression was grim, and Janet’s filled with pain.

‘If something terrible has happened, tell me and get it over,’ Alison said.

‘Richard has just been to say goodbye to Janet and me,’ Emma said. ‘He’s flying to New York tomorrow—’

‘With that woman!’ Janet cut in with contempt. ‘They’re going to be married.’ She could no longer restrain her tears and allowed them to course down her face. ‘I can’t bear it, Alison. And now Auntie Emma knows what a fool I am, too.’

Emma handed her a handkerchief. ‘Some detective I am! Why didn’t I see what was under my nose? But you’re a lovely girl, Janet,’ she comforted her niece. ‘And there are plenty more fish in the sea.’

‘I told her that some time ago,’ said Alison. She took Janet by the shoulders and held her until her sobs petered out. ‘You must try not to think about Richard, my dear. And the way to do it is to bury yourself in work. As I shall have to do.’

‘But it won’t help, Alison. Any more than anything can help you, now.’

‘Did Richard mention me?’

‘I’m afraid not.’

‘But if he thinks taking a wife will allow him to forget he has a mother,’ said Emma, ‘that boy is in for a rude awakening.’
