CHAPTER 18
As Hunter watched her go, she couldnât help but notice that her knees stood firm this time, holding her weight. Sheâd known the day was coming, had time to prepare for it. In her mind, sheâd been saying goodbye since the first day. She sucked in air, thinking through what was nextâsimple things, like could she make it through dinner? Could she tell Keegan that Lauren was gone without becoming an emotional mess? How about Willow? Could she hold it together when she noticed she was upset? And she would notice because people and their feelings were her thing. Maybe, maybe not, but either way you need to go to dinner. You canât back out on them an hour before theyâre ready to put the food on the table.
She fought back tears as her mind replayed Laurenâs last wordsâIâm sorry to be such a disappointment. âYouâre not a disappointment. Not in most ways, anyway,â she breathed, her gaze drifting across the yard to their special place. âI just wishââ And she did wish. Sheâd always wished, wished that Lauren would have treated people more like she treated them. Or, at least, tried to treat them. Maybe she does. Youâre judging her based on what she did as a teenager. For all you know, sheâs changed. Look what she chose to do for a living. She couldâve chosen any specialty, most more lucrative than family medicine and geriatrics. Sheâs smart enough to have been and done anything. But whatâd she do? She devoted her life to taking care of families and old people.
And with that thought, she touched her cell, lifted her fingers, and touched it again, her heart aching, breaking into a trillion pieces. This wasnât the way she wanted to leave things. She dialed, letting the call ring until it rolled to voicemail. âHey, uh, so I know youâre pissed. I just wanted to say that Iâm sorry that I said things the way I did. I didnât mean to be so harsh. Okay, so uh, thatâs it then. Bye, Lauren.â She paused, unable to hold her tears, wishing, and adding, âIt was good to see you again.â After she hung up, she called Mitch, pressing speaker. âHey, uh, so Laurenâs gone back home. Itâs finished. Not the way I was hoping weâd leave things, but itâs finished, anyway. And Iâm still standing. I, uh, I think Iâm gonna spend a couple of weeks in the wilderness. Hopefully, two weeks will be enough to shake off my funk. If not, Iâll take another week. Do you think you could keep an eye on my mom and dad while Iâm gone? Pretty sure I wonât have cell service.â
âAbsolutely. Always happy to look after your folks. You know that. Hey, uh, so, Iâm sorry about what happened,â he added, choosing not to add that he thought Laurenâs return to San Francisco was for the best.
âThanks,â Hunter responded, thinking about camping gear and what sheâd need to pack. âOkay, so Iâm gonna go ahead and call my mom and dad, tell them if they need anything to call you.
