CHAPTER 18

As Hunter watched her go, she couldn’t help but notice that her knees stood firm this time, holding her weight. She’d known the day was coming, had time to prepare for it. In her mind, she’d been saying goodbye since the first day. She sucked in air, thinking through what was next—simple things, like could she make it through dinner? Could she tell Keegan that Lauren was gone without becoming an emotional mess? How about Willow? Could she hold it together when she noticed she was upset? And she would notice because people and their feelings were her thing. Maybe, maybe not, but either way you need to go to dinner. You can’t back out on them an hour before they’re ready to put the food on the table.

She fought back tears as her mind replayed Lauren’s last words—I’m sorry to be such a disappointment. “You’re not a disappointment. Not in most ways, anyway,” she breathed, her gaze drifting across the yard to their special place. “I just wish—” And she did wish. She’d always wished, wished that Lauren would have treated people more like she treated them. Or, at least, tried to treat them. Maybe she does. You’re judging her based on what she did as a teenager. For all you know, she’s changed. Look what she chose to do for a living. She could’ve chosen any specialty, most more lucrative than family medicine and geriatrics. She’s smart enough to have been and done anything. But what’d she do? She devoted her life to taking care of families and old people.

And with that thought, she touched her cell, lifted her fingers, and touched it again, her heart aching, breaking into a trillion pieces. This wasn’t the way she wanted to leave things. She dialed, letting the call ring until it rolled to voicemail. “Hey, uh, so I know you’re pissed. I just wanted to say that I’m sorry that I said things the way I did. I didn’t mean to be so harsh. Okay, so uh, that’s it then. Bye, Lauren.” She paused, unable to hold her tears, wishing, and adding, “It was good to see you again.” After she hung up, she called Mitch, pressing speaker. “Hey, uh, so Lauren’s gone back home. It’s finished. Not the way I was hoping we’d leave things, but it’s finished, anyway. And I’m still standing. I, uh, I think I’m gonna spend a couple of weeks in the wilderness. Hopefully, two weeks will be enough to shake off my funk. If not, I’ll take another week. Do you think you could keep an eye on my mom and dad while I’m gone? Pretty sure I won’t have cell service.”

“Absolutely. Always happy to look after your folks. You know that. Hey, uh, so, I’m sorry about what happened,” he added, choosing not to add that he thought Lauren’s return to San Francisco was for the best.

“Thanks,” Hunter responded, thinking about camping gear and what she’d need to pack. “Okay, so I’m gonna go ahead and call my mom and dad, tell them if they need anything to call you.
