Chapter Two

Sunday evening found me in town alone. Not feeling much like cooking myself dinner, I drove into the city and had a solo meal al fresco. The cool breeze invited outdoor dining, and my vegetarian rice dish with a side of Miso soup hit the spot. Both Kat and Brie had texted me about joining them for dinner, but I opted out saying I would be staying in for the day. It was my intention, anyway, but I felt restless so ventured into town to grab a bite, and just be alone with my thoughts. Looking out over the sea from my table, I let go of all my stress and simply listened to the gulls squawk as they dove for fish. I was at peace.

“Excuse me. Aren’t you the Van Buren’s nanny? Miss Snow?” I looked up, startled that anyone would approach me here, let alone know who I was. My eyes locked with blue ones surrounded by thick dark-blonde lashes. The very masculine face they belonged to stared down at me from an impressive height. It was Thomas Gunnar. He was the liaison from the German Consulate who’d come to dine with the Van Buren’s last month. I’d normally not be meeting any guests who came to a business soiree, but it was a Saturday night, and after the kids went to bed, I was on my way out to meet my friends. I ran into Gunnar in the driveway. He was on his way in, arriving late. Seeing me leave, he jokingly asked if the party was that lame. I’d laughed and then quickly explained that I was the nanny, and not in attendance at the soiree. He’d looked me up and down and said, “That’s a terrible shame. I was just thinking things were looking up.” He wished me a goodnight and that was about all there was to it, so it was surprising that he even remembered me.

I blinked, blinded by the sun coming from behind him. It set his golden hair aglow. He wore it a little on the long side; long enough to pull into a short ponytail at the nape of his neck. His rugged jawline, and straight nose sat in an aesthetically pleasing face. He had strong lips, and a bit of a dimple in his chin. Broad shoulders and a tapered waist indicated he worked out to stay in shape. He kind of looked like Thor. All he needed was the horned hat and a big hammer. Instead, he wore a business suit...on a Sunday.

“Yes. Hello, Mr. Gunnar.” I smiled, not knowing what else to say to the man.

“Thomas, please.” He indicated the chair opposite my own. “May I?”

“Sure. Feel free.” I waited as he sat down and adjusted his seat.

“You’re alone.” He said this as a statement.

“It’s my day off. Every Sunday.” I picked up my Coke and took a sip.

“Ah, yes. You were heading out with friends the last time we met. Did you have a good time?” His casual inquiry made me recall the night before.
