The PUT function takes two arguments. One is the column to be converted. The other is the format of the results or the way the results should be displayed. CharDateofAdmit’s format allows discharges to be sorted for each patient.

The INPUT function is the flip side of the PUT function. It takes a character column and converts it to a numeric. It is most often used to convert character dates to numeric values so that arithmetic computations may be carried out. Example 9.2 converts CharDateofAdmit to a numeric date.

Example 9.2: Converting Character Data into Numeric

proc sql;

create table DataConversion2 as

select CharID, CharDateofAdmit,

input(CharID,7.) as ID,

input(CharDateofAdmit, yymmdd10.) as DateofAdmit format=date9.

from DataConversion1;

quit;
