If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

ROMANS 10:9

So that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

PHILIPPIANS 2:10-11

LORD

H ave you ever watched cable television only to have the channel go out and the words “searching for signal” appear on your screen? That’s what happens to many believers who do not know this next name of Jesus we are going to explore.

Oftentimes, people feel the name Lord is just something to throw into their prayers to make them sound more spiritual. Or something to add to a conversation to give the impression of a high level of holiness. But this name carries with it much more than semantic illusions. It carries authority.

Now, I’m not saying believers have been cut off from accessing any authority endowed through the sacrifice of Jesus. But when we do not know this name or how to rightfully relate to it while on earth, we experience an interruption in the signal. The enemy has been allowed to somehow interfere with the communication and alignment we have with Jesus. So even if you or I have the best 4K television on the market, all we get is static.

In order to gain access to what the name Lord supplies, we first have to understand the difference between two terms. Far too often we confuse them and wind up losing the spiritual battles we face.

God has given His Son ultimate authority over what happens in history. He has placed all things in subjection to Him. As we read in Ephesians, “He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all” (1:22-23).

One of the reasons we often don’t live in light of this truth is because we confuse the terms power and authority . Satan has power. He dominates the world in which we live and influences people’s lives in countless ways. He is as powerful now as he has ever been. His tactics and destruction are both real and damaging. But what he doesn’t have is final authority. Authority is the right to use the power you possess.

For example, football players are generally bigger and stronger—more powerful—than the referees. The referees are often older, smaller, and more out of shape than the players. The players can knock someone down. That’s called power. But the referees can put someone out of a game. That’s called authority.

See, Satan has power, but the only way he is free to use that power over you is through your failure to operate in alignment with Jesus as Lord. Satan does not have the authority to use his power when you function under the covenantal covering of the Lord .
