6: THE SPIRITUALITY OF MEDIUMSHIP

The following list can be looked upon as the spiritual implications of mediumship.

1. Proof of survival

In its deepest sense, proof of survival awakens a realisation of the implications of our eternal existence. It is not about focusing on where we will go at a later stage in our life but about the here and now and how we act and can grow in our daily interactions with others – with other people and species – and our everyday awareness of the spirit world. From proof of survival we come to realise that we have never been born and will never die.

All physical life on our planet has been given birth by Mother Earth. And within physical life there is the essence of spirit that has always existed. It is the animating force of all life. It has imbued our physical bodies with life, breath, consciousness, awareness and love.

We may have been educated to only understand the physical world, but the implications of survival encourage us to look deeper into life – to consider after death states, the interactive relationships we have with Nature and our relationships with God and the spirit world. When we examine these areas it becomes apparent that there is a force, an energy and a power that pervades all life, creation and the Universe. Through this we begin to understand that all forms of life are sacred, that Mother Earth herself is sacred. We come to realise that everything survives and that embedded within the Universe is creativity itself. And when we create in wholesome ways, we take an active role in the creativity of the Universe, God and the spirit world.

2. Sisterhood and brotherhood and the sacredness of human and non-human life

The first point then leads on to this second one, which encourages us to understand that not only does the same spirit exist in all, but that it is also individualised. As we investigate this, we begin to recognise that we are facets of Divinity in individualised form, and it is because of this that we possess the power to create. An integral part of this mystery is the recognition of our sisterhood and brotherhood with all people and species. This encourages us to revere the Divinity and same spirit in all. As we do this, respect and the ability to love all equally becomes a crucial facet of our lives.

3. The evolving spirit

Here we are faced with situations that can be based upon beliefs and personal experiences of the spirit’s evolvement. We are told by spirit communicators that progression is open to us all. This not only implies progression of our thoughts and actions here but also after death. This implies that the world of choice (choosing to evolve in our spiritual growth) is a part of natural progression. It is not about blindly following what the spirit world or mediums tell us we should do, but a personal discovery of what is true for us and our individual responsibility to grow and become wiser.
