I Continued to check off the days on my desk calendar, watching the time diminish until the first guest was due to arrive, the daughter who was bringing champagne and other necessities only obtainable from New York. The calendar reminded me of that bleak morning of December 31, 1995, when Sybil and I sat in the holding room (they termed it) of the Eastern Maine Medical Center, waiting for someone to come with papers to sign, papers that made sure she knew the responsibility was hers should she succumb during bypass surgery.

I had studied the wall where there hung a sign that declared, in bold black letters: TODAY IS and nothing more. The blank space was disconcerting, almost ominous. I said nothing to Sybil, who was nervous enough as it was, but I found myself composing Beckettian lines:

I:

What day is today?

SOME OTHER:

What does it say?

I:

It says no day.

SOME OTHER:

So that’s the day it is.

I:

I see.

A nurse came for Sybil to take her to the cardiac unit. I gathered up our coats and went to the waiting room, reserved for those waiting to hear about the outcome of cardiac operations. I found a copy of the Wall Street Journal and looked at the heading. It was Friday.
