CHAPTER 11

Our pace was quick, but the girls kept up a running dialogue the entire time. Halfway through the run I was blowing hard, but they ran light and easy beside me. I was surprised at how serious they were getting. My sister and her friend had a list of names, female athletes they thought they could poach from other agencies, and some that had no representation.

They knew tennis, golf, and even had ideas about how to market female runners and cyclists. I listened in and offered ideas where I could, but was impressed with how deeply the girls had thought this through. Blaire had a head for business, while Sarah had a flare for the marketing side of the business. By the time we finished our five-mile run, the girls had two more names they wanted to reach out to.

“I’ll get started on the presentations,” Sarah said, wiping the sweat from her brow as we walked the last hundred meters to the house. “Can you find their contact info and reach out to them or their parents?”

“Will do,” Blaire nodded. “It’ll give me a chance to use the letterhead I had designed.”

“What are you calling your agency?” I asked.

“Alpha,” Sarah grinned up at me. “We’re naming it after our first client.” I raised my eyebrow at Blaire, but she didn’t meet my eyes, and I noticed spots of color in her cheeks.

“Let’s make sure your lawyer friend finished with the incorporation paperwork,” Blaire said, ignoring her friend’s grin.

“Will do,” Sarah said, her tone a match for Blaire’s from earlier. She flashed her friend a mocking smile when we drew abreast of her car and pulled me into a hug. “Make your move, dude, or else she’ll be unbearable.”

Sarah flashed me an impish grin and a wave before darting around her car. My sister frowned after her friend, but I knew she didn’t overhear what she’d whispered in my ear. When I turned to follow Blaire inside, a storm of butterflies blossomed in my guts and I made fists to still the trembling in my fingers.

I found her in the kitchen drinking a bottle of water and tried to pin her in place with a stare, but she ignored my pointed look and, grabbing her phone, went to climb the stairs to her room. I couldn’t let her retreat from me again and grabbed her wrist, holding her in place.

“Blaire, we need to talk.” she rolled her eyes at me and crossed her arms beneath her large bust, waiting for me to continue. “Earlier with mom… the other day with Tessa and Sarah before that… Explain this to me.”

“Explain, what?” She asked, growing awkward as she twisted her hips and glanced towards the stairs and a way to escape. “You had your heart broken, and I… helped you get over it.”

“And the rest of it? This… whatever it is going on between us?”

Blaire grew even more uncomfortable and half turned away from me. Taking a long sip from her water
