Chapter Eight

Ken

Ken was a bundle of nerves as he waited for Cleo inside the restaurant. This was the first date he had been so nervous for in his life. Not even his first date during his teenage years had been this nerve racking.

There was so much at stake here. This was going to decide their future, whether they would be together or not, whether they were going be a family or not. There was only one chance to do this, and he had to make it perfect. That was why he had chosen the best restaurant in town, gotten his suit out of storage, and even went for a haircut. All these for tonight. All these because he was scared of a little boy.

He had told Cleo about his plans for Charles. He had talked big, but that was just him talking out of his ass. He implemented some of what he had said but overall, he didn’t know what he wanted to do with his son. Fear gripped him when he thought about how he had a dependent now. Apart from meeting him, he didn’t know what else to do. That was why he needed Cleo to marry him. At least there was someone who knew what they were doing. That was why everything was on the line tonight.

The only flaw with this was the bride. She was resisting against that idea. He should have expected that since she didn’t even tell him about Charles. But he saw a glimmer of hope. Knowing how stubborn she was, the only reason he had this chance was because she had compromised. Otherwise, they would still be in a stalemate.

Now that he thought about it, though, did she agree to this date to prove a point? Was she, in fact, standing him up? It was one hour past the time they were supposed to meet, and there was no sign of her. He hadn’t received any message from her, either. Sweat began to drip down his back. He could feel the stares from the other patrons boring into him.

Being in one of the most well-known restaurants in the city, he was sure that everyone there knew him. And with how he drained the wine bottle on the table, everyone knew what had happened to him. He burned with humiliation. If he had even an inkling of what she was planning, he would have insisted on driving her over.

As he nursed his wounded pride, she suddenly appeared across the table. A waiter helped her get seated while he checked out her condition. She was more disheveled than normal. Her cheeks were flushed and dewy, her breath was coming in short puffs, and her chest was heaving, while her hair was flying all over her face. It appeared that she had been running. And while a part of him was concerned, his alcohol-laden mind was too antagonized to care.

“Sorry for being late. Charles wouldn’t let me get out the door,” she explained with a breathy voice.
