Chapter 19

Darwin tried to calm the frustration and anger seething inside him. To feel such emotions was shameful and weak. And yet, he’d felt both when he’d dealt with that incompetent, one-eyed salesman.

When he first saw the crystal ball under the shade of the green-striped sales tent, he couldn’t believe it. Every day he roamed the market looking for the harp. Not just Jarfarians sold there, but men from all over the western hemisphere and sometimes from as far east as Aggadorn and Trigden. If the harp was to surface, Darwin figured it would be there. But after months of failure, he had begun to lose hope.

Until he’d spotted the crystal.

He’d seen a crystal only one other place—in the Master’s chamber. Though he’d never witnessed Mortimyr using the enchanted piece, he’d heard enough to know it was used to communicate with the Masters from Illydian. Rumor had it that the very first Masters created the balls from the sands of the Great Desert. Darwin didn’t know how many of the pieces existed, but he knew there couldn’t be many since Mortimyr guarded it like a sacred relic.

And now, to have such an object smashed to bits because of the clumsiness of a lackwit! It was almost unbearable. Darwin didn’t know whether to believe the tradesman’s story about how he’d obtained the ball, but if one object from Illydian had surfaced here, others could as well. He should follow the man, just to see—after he finished his tour of the marketplace.

Mortimyr had ordered him to find the harp. He would obey his Master’s command or die trying.
