“Did you not know that the sessions were only until Easter, Lacey? I should have made that clearer. I’m sorry.”

“It’s a load of crap, sir. It’s pointless – like the dolls.”

“I’m moving, but the piano isn’t, Lacey,” says Mr Day. “I’ve been talking to Mrs Hukin to figure out how to keep you playing.”

“I don’t want to keep playing,” I say. “You tricked me.”

“How do you feel I tricked you, Lacey?”

“Stop saying my name. You don’t know me. You know nothing about me. I should have known you would just leave. That you’d make out like I was good, that you liked me, and then just leave anyway.”

“We still have two weeks,” he says.

“I don’t want them. I should never have come in the first place. Stupid piano.” Then I smash my hand down on the keys. The sound is loud and jarring and pain shoots up my wrist. The silence that follows is filled by the slam of the door on my way out.
