WHAT THE HEKS

The Monday back from winter break was chaotic for the kids at Dani and Noah's school. It was as if everybody had gotten amnesia over the short break. Many of them forgot their gym clothes, and some, to Dani's disdain, had failed to take their clothes out of their bags to wash during the break. They still decided to wear them to class for fear of getting in trouble. Dani endured an entire period with the stench of stale body odor, damp socks, and the faint tang of mildew. Her gym class was before lunch, and the horrid smell ruined her appetite. This worked out for her friend, Kari, who left her lunch bag on her kitchen counter. Dani began to share her lunch with Kari just as Noah found them and sat down.

"What's up, ladies?" said Noah.

"Your friend, Dani, is awesome-sauce; she's saving me from starvation," replied Kari.

"Yeah, my friend, Parker, forgot his lunch too but is getting cafeteria food."

"That food is so bad for you. It’s salty, and I found a hair on my pizza slice the last time I went through the line," Kari proceeded to wrinkle her nose and point her index finger into her mouth like she was pretending to make herself gag.

"Eww!!" commented Dani.

"Dani, do you want to meet in the library in a little bit to work on our project?" Noah winked but made sure Kari didn’t see him do it.

"We only get a half-hour lunch break; you two should relax," responded Kari. Dani and Noah looked at each other, "We got enough of that in Cancun last week!" replied Noah.

"Wow, I was wondering why you both look so tan," said Kari.

Kari left to catch up with another friend to see how her break went. Dani and Noah headed to the library to look at the newspaper archives before the bell rang.

"How do we find the story? What if they didn't report it to the press?" asked Noah.

"One question at a time, Noah. They would tell everyone if they made arrests and broke up the car theft gang. Remember, the Chicago Superintendent was trying to improve the department's reputation. The warehouse was on Claremont Ave, so let's start with that street."

The newspaper search returned several hits about building legal issues, real estate listings, and one article titled "Calamity on Claremont." Clicking on the link opened the article full screen on the library monitor. As Dani started reading, her chest tightened, and her heart felt like it had dropped into her stomach.
