Hawk took the samples of meat and furs from the basket. As Star Woman’s father placed each sample on the ground, it suddenly grew into a large pile. He then called all the people together.

“See before you,” he told them, “that my son-in-law has brought you gifts of meat, fur, and feathers from all the creatures on earth. With these, you will eat food and make clothes. Help yourselves.”

The people were overjoyed as they rushed to gather the food and the clothing materials.

But as they ate and dressed themselves, they changed into the animal whose flesh, fur, or feathers they had taken—into deer, bears, wolves, beavers, turkeys, and many others.

As for Star Woman, her son, and her father, they all became white hawks, which have long been revered by the Shawnee.
