The soldier that had taken Nigella’s watch jolted awake. He took up his gun, stretched his eye lids and looked around for what had woken him. There was nothing to be seen. He looked back to the fire and longed to be there with his colleagues.

He heard a fast scurrying in the darkness and quickly directed his rifle through the trees. The sound stopped. Slowly he began walking in its direction.

Giselle jumped awake to gunshot fire, and faced Nickolas with alarm.

The soldiers all jumped to their feet, aiming their weapons to the trees.

“It came from over there,” Nickolas pointed in the direction.

“Are they here? Are they here?” Panelli desperately asked.

“No,” Santra said. “Mack assured they wouldn’t be able to get near us without setting off –”

The rest of his sentence was muffled as an explosion announced the launch of bright red flares into the night around them. They ignited in the sky with the blinding brightness of burning magnesium.

Giselle and her friends rushed behind the soldiers who aimed their guns into the woods.

Silence returned.

Ednok looked as though he was listening to the air.

“Are we all here?” Neblar asked. “Who was shooting?”

“Brute’s gone sir,” Squarn said.

“Damn it!” Neblar growled. “We’ve only got one more rifle left!” He expressed no remorse for his lost companion.

While Mack climbed a tree and scanned the grounds, an empty-handed soldier dawdled to the surrounding scrub.

“Johnson,” Neblar barked. “Step away from there.”

Nickolas made a movement forward, but Ednok stopped him with his arm.

“There’s nothing out there, sir,” Johnson turned back arrogantly. “It’s CLEAR—”

As soon as the words left his mouth, he was grabbed by his ankles from the edge of the ferns. It happened so quickly, those around could do nothing to help him.

Giselle drew her sword and moved closer to Nickolas, her heart pounding to the horrifying sound of his screams as he was dragged away through the trees.

“They’re here,” Ednok said.
