The best general introductions to Pausanias and the Periegesis in English are those of Habicht (1998) and Pretzler (2007), while Pirenne-Delforge (2008) offers the most comprehensive study on Pausaniasâs treatment of myth and religion to date, although Hawes (2021), which appeared after this survey was written, is sure to become a crucial resource on the topic. Myth in the Periegesis is also the topic of substantial chapters by Patterson (2010), on kinship myth, and by Hawes (2014), on rationalizing. Pausanias also figures prominently in Paul Veyneâs thought-provoking study Did the Greeks Believe in Their Myths (1988), which should now be read alongside Hawesâs (2014: 178â185) critique. Frateantonio (2009) studies the way Pausanias responds to the contemporary competition between Greek communities, which often plays out on the field of myth, and Akujärvi (2005) presents a meticulous analysis of the ways in which Pausanias constructs his stance as an authority on many topics, including myth. Gaertner (2006) investigates the ties between the Periegesis and other written compilations of mythographical material, although, as noted, his conclusions do not follow from the evidence presented. It would go beyond the scope of this survey to catalogue the numerous studies of particular myths and the mythic traditions of particular communities that draw heavily from Pausaniasâs testimony. A number appear in a collection of essays edited by Pirenne-Delforge (1998). Brief studies of individual myths encountered in the text can be found in commentaries to the Periegesis. Unfortunately, the latest complete commentary in English is that of Frazer (1898). Although Frazerâs discussions of myths are outdated archaeologically and in other respects, they still useful on occasion, particularly for the comparative material he adduces from other cultures. Commentary projects have been undertaken in recent decades by scholars writing in Italian (Musti et al. 1982â2017) and French (Casevitz et al. 1992â2005). The Italian series has recently been completed, while in the French series only six of the ten books have been covered so far (although publication of a seventh, Book III, is expected soon).
