Chapter fourteen

It was the opposite of awkward with him. We got out of the stream and walked naked together back to the tent, and for a moment, our hands touched, as if we might catch fingers, although we did not quite. It was still warm, and our skin dried off in no time, but we had to towel our hair; he went first, and then, just when I thought he might hand the wet cloth to me, he began to towel mine. It was a very sensual moment, feeling him standing slightly above me, taking care of me, attending to me.

He said that we still needed to wash our tank tops and socks to let them dry overnight, and I said I would do it. Without dressing, I took his things down the edge of the stream and let the water run through them, pulling them out, letting it pour out of the fabric, scrubbing one side against another, and slapping it against my shin to dry it off a little. How strange, but also nice, to be washing his things for him, as it had been when he had toweled my hair.

I walked back to the tent and hung the things over a bush near our tent. Meanwhile, he was going through what we had for dinner. The icebox had melted through the day, and he recharged it from the USB in his car. Then he took some beers down to the stream.

“I hope they don’t come back covered in your cum,” he joked, and I laughed, but mostly, I felt relieved that he was still joking with me.

Eventually, we pulled on our shorts and sneakers and decided to fish for a while, and as the night before, we quickly got some bites, this time three trout. He asked me to set a fire, and this time, he cleaned the fish.

Of course, I knew how to work and deal with wood. It was what I did every day: chopping it, shaping it, feeling it against my palms, snapping, turning it into art. I put the fire together carefully, and as I did it, I was thinking about the whole time that I knew Chad.
