‘I need booze,’ Izzy groaned as she took a seat opposite Kirsty. She didn’t even wait for a reply before taking Kirsty’s half-finished cocktail and tipping it back, downing its contents in one swift gulp.

Kirsty giggled nervously. ‘Meeting went well then?’

Izzy slumped into the scalloped leather chair. ‘Better than expected but my nerves are shot.’

‘Did she know?’

‘Nope.’

Kirsty let out a breathy sigh. ‘Thank fuck.’

‘I know,’ Izzy groaned. She righted herself, retrieving the cocktail menu from between the salt and pepper shakers on the table. ‘What was that?’

‘Salty Pecker,’ Kirsty replied with a chuckle.

Izzy grimaced. ‘First time I’ve knocked back one of them.’

All the cocktails had strange names. But if they contained alcohol they could be called I Love Penis for all she cared.

It was their first time in the trendy west end bar opposite Kelvingrove Museum, with the industrial-looking unit being the closest pub to Gloria’s office. She’d known she’d need booze pronto after their little tête-à-tête.

‘She doesn’t know anything then? For sure?’ Kirsty asked again.

‘Nope. Well, apart from what I told her.’

‘You told her?’ Kirsty gasped, eyes wide. ‘Told her what?’

‘About the accidental kiss.’

‘The first one?’

Izzy rolled her eyes before returning them to the cocktail menu. ‘Of course the first one. I’d have no job if she knew about yesterday.’

Her phone buzzed in her purse, which was tucked between her hip and the side of the chair.

She took a deep breath, in the mood to talk to no one but Kirsty. Her mind had no problem contradicting itself when it saw Ingrid was calling. She let it ring out, knowing a more important problem needed solved first.

With the pace of a champion speed reader she skimmed the menu, hurriedly looking for whatever contained the most alcohol. Tequila and champagne. Why not?

‘Get me a Bim Bam Bongo, please?’ Izzy said, getting her bank card out and passing it to Kirsty. ‘Plus, you’d better get a little extra for yourself, make up for my earlier theft.’

‘Everything okay?’ Kirsty asked, her eyes flicking to the phone.

‘It’s just Ing. I’d better see she’s okay.’

Kirsty didn’t even try to hide the smirk on her face as she left the table.

Ingrid picked up after a few rings. ‘Hey, Ing, you alright?’

‘I’m good. I just wanted to see how you were? How did today go?’

Concern was clear in her voice, making Izzy’s heart skip around her chest. ‘It was fine, actually.’

‘Just fine?’

‘I was so sure she was going to say something about yesterday and I’m a terrible liar, so I told her about our accidental kiss at the hunting lodge.’

‘And what did she say about that?’

Izzy could imagine Ingrid’s face: perfectly level with emotion but those gorgeous patina eyes would give her away. They’d be clouded with worry.

‘She was cool about it. Understood it was an accident. I don’t think I could quite spin the same outcome for yesterday, but…’

It was meant to be a joke but the quiet intake of breath on Ingrid’s end of the line told Izzy it hadn't landed.

‘I don’t know what to do to make it up to you.
