The door, however, has remained closed.

Even now, they are scratching at it. Screeching. Hissing. Moaning.

Huang among them.

Eventually, the sounds stop. My skin feels like it is burning. I wonder if the school is on fire.

The door remains shut and I am writing. Feverishly. Almost done.

Deteriorating quickly. Lungs cry. For air. Thirsty. Skin shrinking.

Death. Nears.

Love. Huang. Chen.

It was the end of the transcription. Ian Mă had no doubt morphed into a zombie. The zombie she had shot in the head in Shifen.

With hands balled into fists, she clenched her teeth. Ox was at the center of everything evil.

A gargled scream interrupted her thoughts. Was it Clay’s?

Another scream curdled her blood. She was sure now: the voice was her husband’s. And by all accounts, he was fighting for his life.

Adrenaline supercharged her muscles. Darting from the desk, she neared the lab door, hearing another open in the hallway. A few footsteps later, Ox laughed. She recognized his demonic voice.

“He’s breaking,” he announced, as if wanting the entire floor to hear. “He’ll be spitting up that laptop combination like a baby. Keep him burping for a little while longer!”

Footsteps faded down the hall.

Slowly, Ruby unlocked and turned the knob, pulling the door toward her, just slightly. The coast was clear to her left. Poking her head out to glance right would look suspicious. Instead, she boldly walked into the hallway, embracing her disguise as a technician. Thankfully, the hall was empty so she inched toward the adjacent lab. Ox had left the door open a crack. She strolled by number-105 before flattening her back against the wall, near the door frame. She listened.

“You heard the man,” an American voice said. “We ain’t got all day. Ox wants those security codes. As in, yesterday. No more fucking around.”

“Fucking around?” another voice questioned. “We’ve been working on this guy since he arrived. And he still hasn’t broken.”

“Let’s hold him in the drink longer, ‘til his legs quiver,” the first voice taunted. “If that doesn’t work, we’ll add electricity to this party. We get to kill him anyway. We’ve got fifteen more minutes before Mr. Pretty Face’s time is up.”

Then and there, she vowed to kill that son-of-a-bitch turncoat: Ox. And his accomplices. Every last one of them.

But for now, she had to focus. She hoped there were only two of his goons in the lab. Any more, and her chances of recovering her husband would plummet. In crash-and-burn territory.

She pulled the pistol from its holster and readied it. As she inched in front of the door, an alarm sounded. A piercing, non-stop beep, beep, beep.

Lights activated in the hallway, red beams swirling around and around.

No doubt Ox and Vladimir had learned of her escape.
