IT WASN’T UNTIL THEY were interrupted by Sirin and Naneni bringing the cassava that Aalyan remembered his manners and offered his guests some food. It was no accident the meeting had been set away from the communal areas, but the teenagers were happy to go grab them some fresh fruit and water if it meant they could get a break before they had to resume hauling their load.

Libi’s twin brothers went for it with gusto, which Aalyan couldn’t even blame them for, it was probably the first time in their lives that they could eat with no guilt or fear. It was only now, after two months with the Jaguars, that Aalyan was beginning to understand eating could be a pleasure not born out of silencing the terrible pangs of hunger.

The Leopard pack had changed a lot since he’d left, a lot more courting was going on, including by his own brother, who’d insisted for years that he was fine on his own. Was this what he’d accomplished by coming here? He’d had no real say in the matter but hearing about the freedom it’d given his people—for they’d always be his, even if he wasn’t theirs—he couldn’t help but be proud.

For the first time, his sacrifice made sense. It meant something. It had made something better for a lot of people. Perhaps that was what the Moon had intended.

Libi was happily recounting a prank some of the kids had pulled on Aalyan’s old friend Nelen when Telez arrived. Her head turned towards the other beta.

“Oh, hi,” Aalyan said, standing up. “We—” He cut himself off. There was no reason to be nervous, he was doing this for the pack as well as himself. “Hi, Telez. This is an old friend of mine, Libiad, and her brothers, Daber and Bari.”

Telez nodded. “It’s a pleasure,” he said formally. Then, to Aalyan’s surprise, he actually stepped closer to where Libi sat on a tree stump and offered a hand for her to shake.

She did, standing up a little too quickly. Aalyan could hear her pulse racing. “Same,” she said, big brown eyes stuck on the Leopard.

“I hope you are having a pleasant reunion,” Telez told Aalyan. “I just came to check everything was as agreed with the cassava.”

Aalyan opened his mouth, but Libi was faster than him. “Yes! Everything is great, and thank you for the fruit, it was a treat.”

He was fairly certain that Telez’s smile in response was warmer than diplomacy required.

“We’d like to invite you back, actually,” Aalyan told her, it was what they’d agreed on with Telez. They’d actually chatted half the morning away and if they didn’t want to be stumbling in the dark with their heavy load, the Leopards would have to leave them soon. “We have a proposal that could help both our packs.”

Libi’s mouth twitched, but a moment later she was nodding. “Do you want me to pass it on to my Alpha?”

“Actually, I’d like you to bring reinforcements.”
