Melvin Pender of the United States was considered a contender for a medal in the 100-meter sprint at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Pender tore a rib muscle in one of the heats. Ignoring the advice of doctors, he ran in the final and finished sixth. Pender was hospitalized after the race.
10. KÃROLY VARGA
Two days before he was to compete in the small-bore rifle competition at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, Károly Varga of Hungary broke his shooting hand. Despite the injury, he won the gold medal.
