Chapter 10: Ye Discount Department Shoppe
The street running through Villageton seemed even busier after Wolt and Oliverâs morning meal. They had to weave in and out of groups slowly coming in and out of the various establishments. Ahead of them, in the very center of town, was the crown jewel of the Villageton.
Oliver stopped and looked up at the large emporium that blocked the road and the cast a large shadow onto the road in front of them. A sign was carved out of one large tree trunk the read: Ye Discount Department Shoppe. The sign ran the entire spans of the building which reminded Oliver of a layered cake that heâd once tried to make for Ellenâs birthday. It was as if several buildings were stacked on top of (and on the side of) several others with not a single one being level or even. The building materials switched from brick, to lathe and plaster, to wood. Each level angled and listed in its own way. It looked as if it could topple the whole thing at any moment. The roof was a jagged line. A row of nasty teeth biting up to the sky. There wasnât a truly square window in the place. Each piece of glass was uniquely cut to fill whatever shape the opening happened to be.
Oliver pointed and looked at Wolt, confused.
âHow?â was all the Earthen could muster.
âScorcerium,â Wolt replied.
They approached two huge window displays flanking double doors so tall Oliver could have walked through standing on the shoulders of his twin brother with ease. Oliver pulled on a long, carved handle made from a large bone of some strange animal. The door opened easily despite the massive size.
Oliver and Wolt were hit with a wall of contradicting odors. Oliver caught hints of vanilla and cinnamon, but also leather, and exotic animal musks. He looked around in complete awe of this place. Wolt didnât seem impressed by any of it and walked in without any of the same appreciation.
There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the massive retail area. Shelving was built into the walls of the building up to the ceiling, though not one was perfectly square. Mix-matched tables displayed all sorts of odd trinkets, and gadgets. Food and cooking supplies seemed to be mish-mashed with large, dusty tomes, and hunting equipment. The whole interior seemed ready to bust with various products but no two are alike, let alone in any sort of uniform packaging.
Some items appear brand new, others as if they were forged in dust. Everything, Oliver thought as he passed from table to table, was as if technology in Selgard seemed to have stopped at a point similar to The Middle Ages on Earth.
Across the shop floor, and unbeknownst to the pair, a shrouded figure moved from behind a pillar in a far corner. The figure watched them under a hood that blackened out their face in a curtain of shadow.
Oliver and Wolt walked deeper into the store, and the shrouded form moved behind a display table with several medium-sized cloth sacks.
