Three more men disappeared in the next two weeks, each on patrol, or hunting. The only evidence found of them was a red mess in the snow, and prints, like those of a barefoot man. Skar didn't return, and as rolls were called, men seemed to be slipping away every day. I began to worry. I knew I should have fired when I saw Eliora, should've done anything to stop Skar if I couldn't stop her.

I also had to worry about Kuro and his plans. I’d been gone for some time now, and while the city seemed to be in stasis, it wouldn’t stay that way. Still, I needed to see this through. Something was happening, and I needed to know what. Maybe it was that stubborn streak I’d inherited from my father. Maybe it was just stupidity. Regardless, it was important to me. Kuro could fuck his bird if he didn’t like it.

Something nettled me, and I tried to place it. I was sitting here, waiting. For what? More slaughter? That didn’t feel right. I felt like I had to be here, to witness something. I needed answers before I could move on. Whatever was going on in camp was important. Maybe El was trying to tell me something. I thought of the furnaces. I’d never seen them, but all that flesh, all those souls, burning day and night. All for the Liche and their city, their pale imitation of a once-great nation. The wrongness tugged at me, stronger than ever, and I turned in my bunk, trying to shake it. Magic whispered its promises in my veins, and the kernel of an idea took root in my exhausted mind.

When I slept, it was more often nightmares than not, of men made ruin and screaming alarms that brought the Reaper and the woman with the black teeth. Worse, when I lay awake, staring up at the empty bunk above me, I knew that out there was red death stalking the city.
