“I have to get out there.”

“You may not.”

“I can take care of myself.”

“I know, but you may not leave.”

Rodrigo resented himself for not stopping Estella. He didn’t expect Gunther to enter the room as soon as she left.

Gunther had advised Rodrigo to stay inside the room because assassins had entered the manor and it was dangerous to leave. “If you want to leave, you’ll have to cut me down first.”

Gunther tilted his head, revealing his neck. The sounds of a bloody battle erupted outside. Screams and hurried footsteps. Estella was out there with her promises to protect him. No, she said she wasn’t here to protect me today, but someone else.

In any case, she was going against the Kartinas to protect the Erharts. It made no sense for him, the family head, to wait inside the room.

“A-a-are you really going to cut me down?” Gunther stuttered in panic as Rodrigo adjusted his grip on his sword.

“No, I’m going to knock you out.” Rodrigo swung his sword, still inside its scabbard, and Gunther left the door unguarded for a moment as he ducked out of the way. That brief moment was the problem. With a loud bang, the door was thrown open and a horde of black-clad assassins crowded into the room.

They slashed at Rodrigo. Despite the sudden attack, Rodrigo blocked every blade with his own without missing a beat. He also didn’t forget to put some distance between them and himself by backing up. The Erhart knights ran into the room soon after. The office wasn’t small, but with twenty strong men crowding around him, it felt cramped.

A bloody battle ensued. The assassins cut down anyone in their way, left and right. The Erhart knights fought by the book, but the assassins fought dirty. Naturally, the odds were in the assassins’ favor. But there was someone who could turn the tide.

Rodrigo.

He gripped his sword and jumped into the fray. Amidst the dozens of swords tangled up in the crowded space, his ability to exploit any opening he saw by stabbing and then backing away again was excellent.

“Gunther, back!” Rodrigo shouted for Gunther to guard his back. In the meantime, most of the knights had collapsed, and two of the assassins were coughing up blood.

Those damned Kartinas.

Rodrigo ground his teeth. At that moment, a not at all welcome voice rang out from the window.

“What is all this?” It was Estella, her clear voice juxtaposing the bloody sounds of battle.
