Chapter 12

September 2005

The next day, Skye was up by ten. She let Lawrence sleep while she pulled out a pair of dark denim jeans and a yellow tank top, along with her favorite white sneakers. She pulled her hair into a ponytail and secured it with a yellow plastic clip. She went downstairs to the kitchen and started to make herself something to eat, but found she didn't have much of an appetite. So she grabbed an apple from the basket on the counter and went into the living room, crashing on the couch in front of the television. She watched a few music videos, then flipped to a cable news station and watched the ticker tape go by. When Lawrence came downstairs in his boxers, yawning, he found her sitting there.

"You okay?" he asked, flopping down next to her with a glass of grapefruit juice.

"I guess." Skye fiddled with the remote. "I don't know what I'm going to say to Mom and Dad. I mean, my little sister is about to go to jail. What are they going to think?"

"To tell you the truth," Lawrence said, looking thoughtful, "I really think once they know what she did, they’ll understand why she's in this situation." He rubbed her shoulder reassuringly. "You can't just let her get away with what she's done. Don't feel guilty about something she brought on herself."

"Why are we even having this conversation?" Skye asked, lying back on the couch. "We’re not even sure if it was her that threatened Terri."

She was in denial, and he was on to her. Lawrence shook his head. "We haven't heard from her yet. But we both know it was Delva." He looked up at the crescent moon shaped wall clock above the television. "You'd better get to the restaurant."

Skye rose, grabbing her keys from the hook next to the door. She folded the picture and put it in her purse. Before she left, she hugged him tightly. "I love you, Lawrence. You are so good to me."

Lawrence kissed her forehead gently. "I love you, too. And I'm just returning the favor." He grinned widely. "Now go on. Hurry home, okay?"

"In that case, I'll be back as quickly as possible." The thought of his skillful loving put pep in her step as she made her way to her truck.

As Skye drove to the restaurant, she speculated about what was ahead. I hope we can finally resolve this mess.

When she pulled into the parking lot, Skye saw Terri's little purple VW a few spaces over and breathed a sigh of relief. Walking inside, she looked around until she spotted Terri at a table near the back. She wore blue jeans cut offs and a Marques Houston T-shirt. Skye slid into the booth and smiled at the young woman.

"Hi, Terri."

"Hi, Mrs. Holdron. How are you?"

"I've been better. There was a break-in at the office about a week ago, but nothing was stolen."

"That's weird. I don't know anything about that, if that's what you wanted to ask me," Terri said, swirling her finger in her ice water.
