CHAPTER TEN

“THEY DID IT,” Tony speculated the next morning. “He probably banged her on the picnic table.”

“Shut up. He did not.” The thought of his mother having sex made Tom want to hurl. If she’d done it on the roof last night with Whitaker Lewis, Tom didn’t want to know about it. Or picture it. Nasty.

The object of the argument suddenly came into the kitchen humming, two hours before her normal time to get up. She was already dressed and alert, which was strange. Most of the time she dragged herself to the table in her gown or robe, looking and acting like a zombie.

“Good morning, boys,” she chirped.

Tom slouched against the counter with a mug, waiting for the coffee to quit dripping out of the machine. She came over and kissed him, then kissed Tony, who was drinking milk at the table. Majorly weird.

“You look really happy this morning, Mrs. W.,” Tony told her. He gave Tom a knowing wink.

“I feel wonderful. How are you boys? Okay?”

“Sure,” Tom told her.

“When do you have to be at the bike shop?”

“Nine for both of us.”

She opened the doors to the porch and took a loud, deep breath. “Ah, isn’t it a gorgeous morning? I love this time of day.”

Tony smirked, and Tom threw a pot holder at his head.

“What’s with you?” Tom asked her. “Why are you conscious?”

“Aren’t I usually conscious?”

“Not before nine, Mrs. W.” Tony said. “Sometimes not fully until noon.”

She laughed. “I’m not quite that bad.”

Walking to the dryer, she emptied it of jeans and then dumped in a load of towels she must’ve washed last night before going to bed.

“Would you boys like some breakfast? I think there’s enough bacon and eggs in the refrigerator.”

“We’ve already eaten cereal,” Tony told her.

“Want me to cook you some?” Tom asked.

“No, thanks, I’ll get a bite later. Tom, I’ve been thinking about the diving lessons, and I’ve decided to let you take them.”

“Honest?” He straightened in surprise.

“This doesn’t mean I’ve changed my mind about the navy, but if you’re dead set on learning to dive I want you to do it safely with someone I trust. Have Mr. Parker get you the necessary equipment, then let me know how much I owe him for the rental and the lessons.”

“Great! Thanks.”

Diving! She was finally going to let him take lessons. All right!

He couldn’t wait to call Tony’s dad and tell him the news. Mr. Parker had taught Tony and his little brother years ago, and the three of them were always going out on weekends, having fun. Maybe now they’d invite him along.

“Mom?”

“Yes, sweetie?”

“I’m really sorry about last night.”

“I’m sorry, too. I forget you’re not a child anymore. I’ll try to do better. But please don’t be in too much of a hurry to become an adult, okay?”

“Okay.”

She walked over and gave him a hug. Tony, the idiot, raised his arms and wanted to know where his hug was, so she gave him one, too.

After filling her thermos with coffee, she headed out.
