CHAPTER TEN
âTHEY DID IT,â Tony speculated the next morning. âHe probably banged her on the picnic table.â
âShut up. He did not.â The thought of his mother having sex made Tom want to hurl. If sheâd done it on the roof last night with Whitaker Lewis, Tom didnât want to know about it. Or picture it. Nasty.
The object of the argument suddenly came into the kitchen humming, two hours before her normal time to get up. She was already dressed and alert, which was strange. Most of the time she dragged herself to the table in her gown or robe, looking and acting like a zombie.
âGood morning, boys,â she chirped.
Tom slouched against the counter with a mug, waiting for the coffee to quit dripping out of the machine. She came over and kissed him, then kissed Tony, who was drinking milk at the table. Majorly weird.
âYou look really happy this morning, Mrs. W.,â Tony told her. He gave Tom a knowing wink.
âI feel wonderful. How are you boys? Okay?â
âSure,â Tom told her.
âWhen do you have to be at the bike shop?â
âNine for both of us.â
She opened the doors to the porch and took a loud, deep breath. âAh, isnât it a gorgeous morning? I love this time of day.â
Tony smirked, and Tom threw a pot holder at his head.
âWhatâs with you?â Tom asked her. âWhy are you conscious?â
âArenât I usually conscious?â
âNot before nine, Mrs. W.â Tony said. âSometimes not fully until noon.â
She laughed. âIâm not quite that bad.â
Walking to the dryer, she emptied it of jeans and then dumped in a load of towels she mustâve washed last night before going to bed.
âWould you boys like some breakfast? I think thereâs enough bacon and eggs in the refrigerator.â
âWeâve already eaten cereal,â Tony told her.
âWant me to cook you some?â Tom asked.
âNo, thanks, Iâll get a bite later. Tom, Iâve been thinking about the diving lessons, and Iâve decided to let you take them.â
âHonest?â He straightened in surprise.
âThis doesnât mean Iâve changed my mind about the navy, but if youâre dead set on learning to dive I want you to do it safely with someone I trust. Have Mr. Parker get you the necessary equipment, then let me know how much I owe him for the rental and the lessons.â
âGreat! Thanks.â
Diving! She was finally going to let him take lessons. All right!
He couldnât wait to call Tonyâs dad and tell him the news. Mr. Parker had taught Tony and his little brother years ago, and the three of them were always going out on weekends, having fun. Maybe now theyâd invite him along.
âMom?â
âYes, sweetie?â
âIâm really sorry about last night.â
âIâm sorry, too. I forget youâre not a child anymore. Iâll try to do better. But please donât be in too much of a hurry to become an adult, okay?â
âOkay.â
She walked over and gave him a hug. Tony, the idiot, raised his arms and wanted to know where his hug was, so she gave him one, too.
After filling her thermos with coffee, she headed out.
