The monster with my face looked exactly like me. The same blue eyes, the same constellations of pale freckles across her cheeks. The same scar on her chin from the time I had fallen off my bike.

The imposter held up her hands—my hands!—in front of her face, marveling at the human skin and bones and fingernails that had replaced her claws.

Then a wicked smile spread across her face.

I shivered. I never thought the sight of my own grin could creep me out.

The monsters chattered excitedly as they looked around at their now human classmates. The one who looked like Tad Preston couldn’t stop touching his teeth. “How am I supposed to bite through flesh with these?” he grumbled.

Fake Willow held up her arms. “And how am I supposed to tear someone apart with these scrawny limbsssss?” she hissed. “I might as well be made of matchstickssss.”

Ms. Amberline whistled, so loud and shrill that it instantly silenced everyone.

“You need to keep your cool,” she instructed them. She pointed at Fake Harvey, who was trying to bite into his own wrist. “And you need to stop trying to eat yourself.”

Harvey reluctantly lowered his arm to his side. Drops of blood oozed from the tiny puncture wounds in the skin.

Ms. Amberline gazed up at the three moons. “Morning approaches. You should all return to your homes and get ready for your final day of exams. By the end of today, some of you will have failed out of the program. But the rest of you will get to go on the journey of a lifetime.”

With that, she dismissed the class. As the monsters paraded out the door, I spied the book sitting on the pedestal.

I thought back to my last moments on Earth. Touching the moving image on the page had opened up the portal between the two worlds and teleported me to this nightmarish place.

Maybe touching this copy of the book would send me in the opposite direction. I could ride that weird cosmic wormhole back to Earth. Then I could warn my parents—and warn the police—that these awful monsters planned to invade our planet.

If I could convince them to believe me.

I would worry about that later. For now, I just needed to get home.

I hung back in the shadows, waiting for the rest of the monsters to depart. As the final few filtered out, Ms. Amberline started to follow them. Once I was alone in the forbidden room, I would run over to the book, open it to the right page, and BOOM. I’d be out of here.

Just as Ms. Amberline reached the door, she abruptly stopped. Her posture stiffened.

Then she twirled around, strode quickly up to the pedestal, and grabbed the book.

I watched in despair as she slipped the book into the pockets of her robe and exited the room, taking my last hope of escape away with her.
