Chapter 7

For the next few days, the students could talk about nothing except Hayden’s murder. It was all over the newspapers. Rumors were going around that he had pissed off one of his posse and they had done it but as upset as they were, Bri doubted that. She actually wished that were true and that they would all five be carted off to prison.

Trinity had been released from the hospital and was back in school by Thursday. She was shocked at the news but she wasn't all that sorry either. Her saying it out loud allowed Bri to say the same. She didn't want anybody to be murdered but if it was gonna happen to someone, it might as well be an asshole like Hayden.

Trinity wanted Bri to go with her to shop for prom dresses. Bri didn’t think she was up to it, but Trinity assured her she was. The town only had a few stores and no mall, so their choices were limited. The most exclusive shop in town was the Pink Petunia Boutique. No way could Bri afford even a hairclip from there, but Trinity's family was rich and Trinity insisted on paying for both dresses. Bri argued but finally gave in. The theme for prom was ‘Through the Decades’ but she and Trinity had decided they didn’t want to dress for the theme.

“Look at this one!” Trinity shouted from across the boutique.

Bri hurried over to where Trinity stood in front of a dress hanging on display. The dress was a sequined, mermaid fit strapless gown the color of rich rubies.

“It’s gorgeous.” Bri hated the little twist of envy she felt that Trinity saw it first. She wanted this gown for herself. It would be perfect. But of course, her friend spotted it first and she should have it.

“This would look amazing on you.” Trinity beamed. “If you like it, I’m getting it for you. Try it on.”

Bri’s heart swelled with affection. She should have known, her selfless friend was thinking of her. She looked at the price tag and gasped. “No way, no freaking way. It’s almost a thousand bucks!”

Trinity shrugged. “My budget for both our dresses and accessories is five grand. This is cheap.”

Bri burst out laughing. “Right…a steal.”

Trinity pulled it down and thrust it at Bri. “Come on, try it on.”

Bri did and she felt like a princess. The dress clung to curves she didn’t know she had. It felt like silk against her skin. She was immediately obsessed and didn’t want to take it off.

“So, is this the one?” Trinity asked. “You look stunning.”

Bri nodded, afraid to speak because the tears might flow and ruin her beautiful dress. She never dreamed she’d wear, let alone own, something so expensive and beautiful.

“Great. Let’s go find some shoes.”

Trinity picked out her dress, a shamrock green silky gown with a flowing skirt that complemented her squat frame. They each found perfect shoes to match.

“Let’s grab a coffee,” Trinity suggested as they left the shop.

“Okay, sure,”
