Chapter Nine

Sasha gently laid Luna in her crib and slowly backed away. She had been cranky after dinner and getting her to bed had been more of a chore than usual. After an hour of rocking and singing to the baby, she had finally fallen asleep. It was still early, and Sasha was looking forward to a bubble bath and a good book before she fell into bed.

Her plans fell to the wayside when she opened the door to her bedroom to find it occupied. Theo and Logan stood near the window, one of them holding a bouquet of flowers. A box with a pink bow tied around it lay on the center of the bed. She froze in the doorway, arrested by the sight of them dressed for a night out. Logan was freshly shaved and wearing what she’d come to know as his best shoes, and Theo was even wearing a tie.

“Surprise,” Theo quipped with a smile. “You didn’t think we forgot your birthday, did you?”

Sasha’s mouth fell open as Logan laid the bouquet of flowers in her arms. She hadn’t forgotten her own birthday as much as she had decided to ignore it entirely. Her last few birthdays hadn’t been the best, and she hadn’t seen a reason to make a big deal out of it this year.

“How did you know it’s my birthday?” she asked, staring down at the bouquet. No one had ever given her flowers.

“Your application from the agency,” Logan replied. “Theo has a photographic memory.”

“I wouldn’t go that far,” Theo said. “But I do remember things like that. We weren’t going to let the day pass without doing something special for you.”

Sasha approached the bed and ran her fingers over the satin bow decorating the gift box. “You didn’t have to go through so much trouble.”

“Just say thank you and open the box,” Logan commanded.

Sasha set the bouquet aside and untied the bow. She lifted the lid off the box and parted the tissue paper to find a little black dress nestled inside.

“Put it on,” Logan said. “And meet us downstairs when you’re ready. We’re going out.”

Sasha lifted the dress and held it up in the light. It was a simple design, the fabric made to stretch and fit her curves. The thin straps crisscrossed down the open back.

“You got the right size and everything,” she said, inspecting the tag.

“I might have poked around your closet when you were busy elsewhere,” Theo said with a sheepish smile. “Do you like it?”

“It’s stunning, thank you,” she said. “But … are you sure you want to go out with me? I mean … you guys do business in Fredericksburg. Won’t people talk if they see us … together?”

Logan snorted. “I wouldn’t give two shits if they did. But, really, most people in town mind their business. We’ve been spotted with dates before. If anyone’s curious they won’t say anything … not directly to us, anyway.”

“What about the kids?”

“We have a babysitter,” Theo said. “She watched the kids all the time before we hired you.
