Chapter 13: The Thieving Monkey

Fortunately, Joe had brought a torch and, as he switched it on, he grinned as he caught sight of the outline of a boat. He turned to Will. “I knew it’d be close by.” He walked back along the rocks until he caught sight of the girls. “Hey, it’s here!”

The girls hurried back and Joe waited until they were beside him before shining his torch into the cave again. “Look.”

Amy smiled as she saw the boat. “How do we get to it?”

“It looks as though we’ll have to get wet,” Will said.

Joe shook his head. “There must be another entrance.” He stood up and walked over the rocks. “If we continue to head in this direction back towards the beach, we may come to the end of the cave. Hopefully we’ll find an entrance.”

“But what if there’s not one? What if the only entrance to the cave is the one we’ve already found?” Sarah said.

“I doubt it,” Joe replied. “That would mean that the men would have to get wet every single time they left the boat.”

“They might have a rowboat,” Sarah pointed out.

“No, I don’t think they have,” Joe said. “Where would they hide it? Have you seen one?”

“Well, no,” Sarah admitted, “but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have one.”

“No, but I don’t think they do, so let’s look for the other entrance.” Joe led the way to the beach then headed behind the cliff and started searching.

Suddenly, Will yelled out. “I’ve found it!”

The others hurried over and looked at the gap in the rock that was almost completely hidden from view by two palm fronds.

Joe nodded. “This should be the same cave.” He switched on the torch and walked through the entrance. As he caught sight of the boat moored next to the rocks, he smiled. “I knew there had to be another entrance.”

“Now we just need to find the money,” Will said.

Amy looked at her watch. “Shouldn’t one of us keep watch in case the men come back?”

Joe nodded. “Why don’t you and Sarah keep watch while Will and I hunt?” As Amy agreed and left the cave with her sister, he and Will climbed aboard the boat and made their way into the wheelhouse.

“The money is more likely to be in the cabin,” Joe said, “so let’s look there first.” The cabin door was unlocked, so he climbed down the stairs and took in the surroundings in a glance. There was a bench, a table, a closet, and what looked to be two small bunk beds on either side. “It shouldn’t take too long to search this room.”

Will shook his head. “No.”

The boys quickly searched all over. However, after spending five minutes examining every nook and cranny in the cabin, Joe sat down on the stairs. “I thought we would have found it by now.”

Will nodded. “Yes, which means that the men might have it on them.”

“That is a possibility,” Joe replied. “Anyway, let’s search the wheelhouse.” He walked up the stairs and began searching.
