‘A lamb pasanda, a masala special mix bhuna, pilau rice, two Peshwari naans, and two pints of Kingfisher, please.’ Leo gave his order to the waiter.

The lagers arrived almost immediately, and Jilly took a long drink.

‘Steady, tiger.’ Leo’s words were teasing. ‘You feeling better about the investigation, then?’

‘I was pissed off this morning when we had to release Herr Franz, but, after meeting his parents, I am more convinced than ever he is our man. I’ll have to get Tim Book to repeat his searches for organisations using this Black Sun symbol.’

‘Franz already feels superior to us mortals, and is in search of power to elevate that further. So, with him, it’s about ritual, about a perverted ceremony. It’s not about arousal. He’s not getting off on these murders. But…’

‘But what? You still have doubts?’

‘No, I think we’re right — but it’s still not the full story.’

Jilly paused as the food arrived. She tore a piece of naan bread, scooped up some of her sauce and chewed. ‘Go on,’ she said.

‘Well, I think Franz has this nonsense fancy that he can tap into some mysterious force. What I am not sure of is how murdering successful, Aryan-looking women will help achieve that.’

‘I would have thought that was obvious. Isn’t it like cannibalism? Didn’t early tribes eat their enemy, thinking they would take on their powers? I know our Mr. Fischer is academic, but it doesn’t stop him having a variation of the same idea.’

‘Yes, maybe you’re right — I may be overthinking this. If he is obsessed with — what was the phrase — oh yes, his own robust hereditary constitution — then perhaps he feels he can absorb the “racial purity” of these women.’

Jilly stopped eating. She cradled her beer glass and sat forward. ‘It’s down to police work now. My team has to find the evidence to get this guy.’
