Chapter 16: Meeting The Boss

Muscles had a broad grin on his face. “Look what we have here!”

Joe was disappointed with himself. It was obvious that the man had lain in wait for him, but instead of waiting at the bottom of the hole, he had waited at the top. He put his hands up in mock surrender. As he saw the man relax, he took off running towards the mine entrance.

Muscles rushed after Joe, grasping the boy’s arm with his burly hand.

“Ow! Let me go!” Joe yelled. He struggled to get away from the man’s grasp, but he couldn’t.

Muscles grinned smugly at the boy. “I’m not going to let go of you until you’re with the others.”

“Why do you want to keep us locked up? If you let us go, we won’t tell a single person that you’re in the mine,” Joe said.

Muscles laughed. “I’m no fool. You’ll promise one thing, but when you get out of here you’ll change your mind. Come on, let’s get moving.” He pushed Joe towards the hole.

“Where are we going?” Joe asked.

“We’re going back down the hole so you can be reunited with your friends,” Muscles replied.

A smile flickered across Joe’s face. If he was able to go down first, then the man wouldn’t be able to stop him and he’d be able to run down one of the tunnels. And if the man went first, he could run away. Trying not to show that he was happy about what was about to happen, Joe looked at the man. “So who’s going to go down first?”

“You are. But I’ll need you to give me your torch,” Muscles said.

Joe frowned. “My torch?”

Muscles nodded and held out his hand. “Give it to me. Now.”

“I didn’t bring one with me,” Joe lied.

Muscles laughed. “Do you think I’m stupid? Do you want me to make you give it up or are we going to do this peacefully?”

Joe hesitated. If he had a torch, it may have been possible to lose the man in the many tunnels that made up the mine but, without it, he wouldn’t stand a chance. He reluctantly reached into his pocket and handed over his torch.

“Now, down the rope.” Muscles looked at his watch. “Come on, we don’t have all day.”

Joe walked over to the hole and climbed down. The man waited a minute before he followed the boy. Once the two of them were down on solid ground again, the man pushed the boy down the tunnel. “Get going and hurry up. I haven’t got time to waste.”

The two of them walked down the tunnel for roughly five minutes before they came in sight of a light coming from within a cave. It was the same one that Joe had seen light coming from earlier.

Walking into the medium sized cave, Joe saw that the others were standing by the wall at the back of the room. He walked over to them and noticed the look of disappointment on their faces. But he didn’t take it personally.
