âWhat does it say?â Lumiere wanted to know.
Belle read:
Everyone stared.
âHuh?â said Chip.
Belle patted the little cup. She knew exactly how he feltâtotally confused.
The four wandered over to a nearby couch. Belle, Chip, and Lumiere sank into the cushions in silence. Cogsworth paced back and forth in front of them.
âThis is harder than I thought,â said Lumiere.
âThe clues are veryâ¦mysterious,â Belle agreed.
âStop pacing, Cogsworth!â cried Lumiere. âYou are making me nervous!â
Cogsworth glared at the candelabrum. âItâs how I do my best thinking!â he explained.
âThen do your thinking somewhere else,â said Lumiere.
Belle shook her head. Those two were always arguing!
âI have a guess,â said Lumiere. âI am not sure if it is correct. But the number seventy-three made me start thinking. However, I could be wrongâ¦.â
âOut with it, Lumiere!â Cogsworth sputtered. âWe havenât got all day!â
Belle hid a smile. Actually, they did have all day. And the next day, too. The mystery was a decade old, for goodnessâ sake! But she understood the mantel clockâs impatience.
âPlease tell us, Lumiere,â she said.
âI was thinking that perhaps it is the grand piano,â the candelabrum replied.
Cogsworth wanted to argue. But it was as good a guess as any. âThat could be it,â he said, nodding. âA piano has eighty-eight keys, so it could be under the seventy-third!â
âExactly my thoughts!â replied Lumiere.
He and Cogsworth looked at each other in surprise. They had just agreed on something!
âTo the conservatory!â shouted Chip.
Belle followed the three household objects down several hallways and into another wing of the castle. And there, in the conservatory, stood a beautiful grand piano. They all stared at it. Could this be where the next clue was hidden?
Belle stepped forward, counted the keys, and touched the seventy-third one. It made a plinking sound.
âStill in tune after all these years!â said Cogsworth proudly.
Belle truly wanted Lumiere to be right. But it just didnât seem possible. âI just donât see where a clue could be hidden,â she said slowly.
âMaybe itâs inside!â cried Chip. And before anyone could stop him, he climbed right inside the top of the piano. They could hear him hopping around.
âNothing!â he said, poking his head out.
