She stiffened. “Stop that silly talk, Ben. What do you mean?”

“Ceretha, the less you know the better. You have to do what I tell you. I promise it’s going to be OK.”

“But Ben,” she protested.

“No, you have to listen! I’m going away now, but I’m coming back and when I do, we are going to be free—you and me and everyone here!”

“Here’s what I need you to do…”

Five minutes later, Jethro whirled at the sound of an argument. He laughed as he saw Ceretha swing her hand in an arch, slapping Ben in the face.

He didn’t stop her as she stomped away and joined her mother on the other side of the cotton field.

Ben turned as Jethro approached. “Hey, boy—what happened to you?” Jethro jeered. “Lost your sweet thang, huh?”

His ugly laugh was interrupted by a blood-curdling scream.

All eyes turned to the lake beside the cotton field. A red headed girl screamed again, this time even louder.

“Help me! Snake!” she cried.

“It’s Miss Laura,” Jethro yelled. “She’s in trouble!”

Everyone started running toward Laura. Everyone but Ben, who raced away from the field toward the plantation. No one saw him leave.

Ben had escaped.
