The shower felt warm against my skin, wiping away the stress of what had become an uncomfortable situation. I am not sure how things progressed to the point they have. One day I was mourning the loss of my husband Brett, a man nearly 3 times my age whom I liked and respected but never loved. The next, my best friend left the house to get married. Then I met Paul. Paul was the opposite of Brett. He was exciting, dangerous given his reputation, and not stuffy like all of the people I knew. At first, he was a nice distraction from the emptiness in my house and my heart. I made it clear up front that I didn’t believe in love and that I was not interested in someone whose name was in the tabloids daily.

To his credit, Paul respected my wishes. He cleaned up his act. Quit his casual drug use. Dropped all his other girlfriends and turned out to be quite sweet and funny. When I realized he was falling for me, I told him I wasn’t ready for an intimate relationship and would not have sex until I was. A month later, he confessed he loved me and wanted to be engaged, though the engagement could be as long as I wanted until I was ready.

My first reaction was hell no. I wasn’t in love with Paul any more than I was in love with Brett. But I did like him, and I didn’t want to hurt him. I did not want to be the reason he returned to his unhealthy behavior. Besides. Love no longer had a place in my life. I screwed that up two years ago with Beck. I don’t remember exactly when I fell for Beck. I know he is an escort, but I was never his client. I cannot forget that first pang of jealousy when he made my friend Brit climax for the fourth time the day he took her virginity at my request. I will never forget the beaming feeling of pride when he completed my challenge to have 10 escort dates without fucking any of them. He did that for me.

I had plans to give myself to him as a reward. By the time he completed his tasks, my heart pounded in his presence. Each of the 10 nights, I touched myself to orgasm thinking of Beck.
