Chapter 8

Whatever Lindsey expected, it wasn’t to come home days later to Quinton and Jeremy playing basketball outside Jeremy’s house. She thought with everything that had happened, with their painful talk, that Jeremy would be cold to the both of them. As it was, the sight of him bouncing the ball to her son made her heart feel like a vine wrapped around it and squeezed.

She hated hurting him. But she hadn’t expected the force of his emotions, his puppy dog love for her… and her own. Jeremy made her feel as giddy as anyone ever had, including Dustin. It was stupid not to tell him straight away her fears about what Dustin could potentially do if he found out. Stupid stupid stupid. And maybe not quite as stupid but still pretty dumb had been her attempt at being light when she did tell him. That was always her MO, a strange deprecation and morbid sense of humor when she knew it wasn’t appropriate.

Bottom line, she hurt him. Was he now using Quinton as a means to dig his own claws into her? Dustin proved he was capable of that, but could Jeremy be that cruel too? Maybe. He was young, and emotional.

She pulled into her garage and kept the door open. When she emerged, Quinton was squatting, the ball in his hands. He jumped and launched the ball at the same time, underhanded, and laughed his beautiful laugh when it hit the backboard and dropped in.

“Three points,” Lindsey called, forcing herself to smile. Jeremy’s smile looked equally pained as he fetched the ball.

“That would be, like, halfway across the court,” Jeremy said.

“Nuh uh,” Quinton said, fidgeting and bringing his hand up to his lips. Years ago he habitually sucked his thumb. He didn’t anymore but he sometimes chewed at his thumbs’ cuticles when he was giddy or feeling self-conscious. Lindsey tried to dissuade him from it but it wasn’t like he was chewing his nails down to the quick so she let it slide just as often.

“Uh huh!” Jeremy said, his voice going goofy and making Quinton laugh again.

Lindsey leaned down to give her son a peck on the head. “Did you tell Jeremy the news?”

“The news?” Jeremy asked.

“I joined the basketball team!”

“You did? That’s awesome!” Jeremy said. He held up his hand high in the air. “High five!” Quinton gave him his best scrunched-up face, and Jeremy lowered his hand slowly until Quinton could finally jump and high five it. “Ouuuuch!”

“It didn’t hurt you.”

“Are you kidding me? I might have to see a doctor.”

Lindsey asked Quinton, “How was school?”

He made a sour face. “I got a B on the math test.”

“Aw. You’ll get it next time. Do you have homework?”

“Ummm… can I do it later? Jeremy and I are playing.”

“Fifteen minutes.”

“Okay. I gotta go pee. I’ll be right back.”

“Oh Lord, I did not need to hear that,” Lindsey said.

Quinton ran for their house. When they heard the door shut, Jeremy said quietly, “I’m sorry. I came home and he was walking up the street from the bus stop.
