Chapter Eleven

Things are still really tense between Cassie and I, and honestly, I’m just glad she’s still speaking to me. She scheduled an appointment with her therapist for this week, because Christmas break is coming up.

I don’t know what our plans are yet, with our parents in Germany, and they’ve been oddly quiet lately. I know Mark really wants to know how serious Cassie is about this play, so when she goes to her next practice, I follow her.

I’ve never been to this part of campus before, and it’s honestly really pretty. I threw on an oversized gray university sweatshirt over my jeans and made sure Cassie didn’t see me.

She’s been so secretive about this part of her life, I’m kind of excited to see it.

Once Cassie disappears inside, I throw my hood over my distinctive blonde hair, slipping through the door. There’s a flurry of activity of people making props in the lobby and talking.

Passing these people by when I don’t see Cassie, I continue into the main theater. Searching, I find her next to someone yelling out directions. Sitting at the back of the theater, I watch in awe as she looks confident, happy, and excited.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look like that before.

“Alright, Violet, let’s start from the top, shall we? Song numbers, the whole damn thing. I want to see it all run through once, and then I can pick it apart to my heart’s content,” the man says with a laugh.

Cassie grins and then responds. Her name isn’t Violet though… “Yes, Professor Pales!”

People scurry to follow directions, and then there’s a piano playing. Cassie walks out onto the stage, and my mouth drops open as she starts to sing.

Why didn’t I know she can sing?!

“Excuse me, this is a closed rehearsal,” barks a voice, and I jump.

My hood falls back as I look up at a man with wild, dark, curly brown hair and intense eyes. “I’m sorry,” I gasp. “My step-sister is Violet, and honestly, I was curious. I don’t want her to see me. I can go…”

I start to stand, and he crosses his arms across his chest.

“She hides this part of herself from you, you know,” he mutters, staring at me. “Cas is worried you’re going to tease her, so she spends a lot of hours here practicing. Most people run their lines with someone at home, but she doesn’t feel like she can. I’m going to let you stay, but don’t distract her. Cover up all that blonde hair, you’re a fucking beacon,” he mutters, shaking his head. “I’m one of the assistants on set, so if anyone tells you to leave, tell them Frank is giving you a rare pass to be here.”

I nod, sitting down as he glares at me. Damn, I can only imagine what my step-sister has said about me for him to look at me like this. I would usually say I don’t deserve it, but as clear notes ring out in the theater, I’m not so sure.
