Six hours later...
The water turned from blue to dark blue and then the army halted, hovering in place as they watched a wall of darkness approach. It was like a cloud of evil, coming toward them with nothing to reveal within.
âIs Eight Legs inside of there?â Greyson asked.
As if in answer to his question, an impossibly long tentacle whipped out from inside of the cloud and knocked into the front ship. Whatever metal the ship was constructed from held, but a large crack made it seem like it wouldnât take another and remain intact.
It was then that all of the Ignatu ships shot some sort of metal shells toward Eight Legs. The explosion threatened to burst their eardrums. A huge cloud of fire erupted as the missiles hit their mark.
When the fireball cleared, the dark wall parted to reveal Eight Legs still alive, several dark patches of blood along its body. It let out a howl and hundreds of dark mermaids emerged from within the dark cloud. Lance hesitated. Hundreds of evil mermaids with a giant beast and a wall of black death behind them was something out of a nightmare.
âFollow me!â Greyson yelled, drawing his golden spear. âCharge!â
The thousands of mermaids let out war cries as they followed their commander into battle.
Lance watched as the Ignatu ships began to unload their own army, men with fake tails on their feet to help them swim and unknown weapons in their hands. Each Ignatu was outfitted with a green suit that ended in a glass helmet. Compared to Eight Legs, the entire army looked like baby mackerel swimming next to a whale.
The mermaids clashed, blood starting to fill the water as they tore into each other with spears. It was fierce and ugly, the chaotic mass of mermaids fighting in close combat.
The Ignatu shot bright lights from their weapons which tore holes in their enemies. Lance was soon caught up in the battle and began to shield himself and other allies around him.
Then Eight Legs came. With his many tentacles he swatted friend and foe alike away as if they were annoying fleas. The Ignatu fired their weapons, but even those barely made a dent in its thick skin.
Greyson was busy swirling his golden spear around to lead his mermaids to victory against the evil ones. It was up to Lance to do something.
Lance thought about all the people he had lost in his life, especially Charlotte. He remembered all the times they saved the world and everything difficult he had to overcome. For it all to end like this made no sense.
Lance channeled all of that anger into his spell. When he opened his eyes, an entire tentacle exploded, ripped apart by strong magic. Eight Legs let out a howl that sent both armies staggering back from the sound waves. All fighting momentarily ceased as the torn limb descended into the oceanâs depths.
It was then that Eight Legs turned its large, intelligent eyes toward Lance, staring straight at him.
