Sallet and bevor, German, c. 1480. (Royal Armouries)

However, the difficulties described above were not isolated occurrences during the Wars of the Roses. Soldiers in larger armies could not be trusted to march or pursue enemies without adequate refreshing. In the case of Towton, Yorkist soldiers were more than likely fighting for food and supplies as well as for their lives when they advanced against the Lancastrians on Palm Sunday morning in 1461. In other instances, armies would not even budge because of a lack of supplies. An anonymous royal servant chronicling the events in March 1470, later known as the Lincolnshire Rebellion, illustrates this problem more clearly. After the rebels were defeated at ‘Losecoat Field’, Edward IV pursued his brother Clarence and his cousin Warwick north towards Yorkshire:

[King Edward] put his whole host in noble order of battle, advancing his banner towards Chesterfield understanding none other but that they [Clarence and Warwick] should be there, and then their aforeriders were come to Rotherham to take their lodging, therefore the night following he [Edward] came to Rotherham, where he lodged that night, and there he had certain tidings of their departing, and that knowledge had forasmuch as it was thought by his highness, his lords, and other noblemen there being with him, that he might not conveniently proceed with so great a host, for that the said duke and earl, with their fellowship, had consumed the vittals [food supplies] afore him, and the country afore himself was not able to sustain so great a host as the king’s highness had with him without new refreshing.23
