PART 2
17.
At ten oâclock White was in the study of his apartment drinking his third cup of coffee â American coffee â and considering the actions he needed to take next. His thoughts were interrupted by Horseâs voice on the intercom. âLucius, I have something youâll want to take a look at.â
Horseâs office on the first floor of the old warehouse was every computer nerdâs fantasy. He had the latest in sophisticated hardware, and several systems had been linked together in a way only Horse understood to multiply the power and speed he had available.
âWhat do you have?â White asked as he lowered himself gingerly into the chair beside what would have been a conference table if it hadnât been covered in printouts, wires, and electronic gadgets. Horse didnât show any signs of damage from their venture, and White took pains, literally and figuratively, not to let on how battered and bruised he felt.
âI havenât gotten into the details yet, but at least I know what kind of information is on the disks,â Horse said. âA couple of disks contain records of money transfers. Thereâs a lot of money being moved around. Hundreds of millions.â
White whistled. âThatâs a lot of spare change. Have you been able to trace any of it?â
âNot yet. Itâs going to take some time to identify all the banks and transactions. But thatâs not what I wanted you to see. One of the disks contains scanned copies of deeds for the purchase of property.â
âWhere?â
âI donât know exactly. The properties are only identified by their legal descriptions, but the parcels are located in northern Montana.â
White was suddenly alert. Records of property purchases alone meant little. But Montana. At the very least, it was a strange place for someone from Central America to be buying property. Whatever the purchases meant, they were too close to home.
âThat narrows things down a little, but Montanaâs a big state,â White said, controlling his breathing. âIs there anything you can do to narrow it down?â
âThe legal descriptions locate the properties by range and section. I may be able to get a real estate map from the state records website.â
âSee what you can find,â White urged. âDo you know who the purchaser is?â
âThese documents identify several different corporations as the buyers.â
âWhat can you find out about them?â
âIâm not familiar with the records they maintain in Montana, but I should be able to find out where the corporations are located and identify the corporate officers from state records online.â
âHow soon can you have anything?â
âIâll access the Montana state website for corporate records as soon as weâre through. Itâll probably take a while to narrow down the property locations.â
âWhat else do you have?â
âPlenty,â Horse said, âand you better sit down for this one.â
âWhat can be more surprising than someone from Central America buying land in Montana?â
âOne of the disks contains copies of email messages. Iâve just started looking at them. From what Iâve seen so far, at least some of them refer to your venture in Idaho.
